    Default idea of +gerund

    do you always have to use of + gerund after "idea" or is it acceptable to say "They are trying to convince her of their brilliant idea to offer spare rooms to poor people" ?

    You don't have to:
    It was a good idea to invite them.
    However, here I would use 'of'.
