Sure there is.
If it doesn't depend on anything, then you have to use much.
If it's clearly visible on what it depends AND if it's countable, it is many.

Cheers!

"How much did you spend?"
You have to use much because there is nothing countable here.

Many can be used when it's clear what you spent:
"How many dollars did you spend?"
You can count the dollars.

"How many hours did it take until it got finished?"
You can count the hours.

P.S: Again: Just my opinion!

Edit
Oh, now I see the thread was 1,5 years old...

Cheers!

thanks

very nice!

For uncountable words we use "much".
For countable words we use "many".
Is it right or wrong? - It is right!
Thank you so much! - No problem!
Many people learn English here.

Bye

I've corrected your post as best I could.
Please take your time and read it.

Cheers!

Many is more than one. Much is the amount of things that you spend.

Well, I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I suppose it is a relative term. :)

Do you think this forum has been helpful so far? Do you think you are using English more effectively because of it?

I make plenty of mistakes myself. Please point them out when you see them.

You are welcome always.

:)

I think it is correct to say : You always are welcome .;-)

Maybe we should put a subject whether countable or uncountable noun to identify if we will use many or much. As stated in the grammar rule, we will use many if the subject is a countable noun while much if the subject is an uncountable noun.:)

In the poll question, the subject is "how" plus either many or much, depending on your answer.

I think we should put a accountable noun to be modified after 'how many' like this:
How many hours do you spend ?

That's correct, but it isn't what the question asked. With which word would you replace the blank in the question How _______ would you spend?
