what do you do? or what are you doing?

the answer is I am an engineer.

When you are talking about a job, the question is "What do you do (for a living)?

If you ask someone "What are you doing?" then you are asking them what they are actually doing right now.

What are you doing?
I'm having a cup of coffee.

What are you doing?
I'm writing a letter to a friend.
