Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

Potent enemies tempt and deter us from our duty.

deter = to prevent by fear; hence, to hinder or prevent from action by fear of consequences, or difficulty, risk

Nothing will deter him from success.

Will atomic weapons deter powerful nations from war?

deter = disincline

Bad weather did not deter us from going out.

deter = discourage

The weather deterred them from going for a picnic.

deter = hinder

Certainly, kids shouldn't smoke; parents, taxes and laws should deter them.

deter = prevent

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.
