    James Dean had broken arms...

Can anyone help me with this sentence:

James Dean had broken arms at the time, but he never held
    back his energy from acting.

    Thank you

James Dean never held back his energy from acting even when he had a broken arm.

If both arms were broken you cold remove the article a and use arm in plural form.

James Dean never held back his energy from acting even though (or when) he had broken arms.

You could even be more descriptive and write two broken arms.

Just one way of rewording the sentence.
