Hi, my dear teachers, I am desperate for your help again.
1. Line AB is four times as long as Line CD.
2. Line AB is four times longer than Line CD.
3. Line AB is three times longer than Line CD.
I am confused about these sentences. Some teachers tell me sentence 2 is the equivalent to sentecnce 1, while others tell me sentence 3 is equivalent to sentence 1. Those who think sentence 3 is the equivalent say the second sentence means "Line AB is five times as long as Line CD".
Which one is the equivalent to sentence 1? You please give a detailed answer. A world of thanks to you!:)

(1) and (3) are equivalent.

In (1), AB is expressed in terms of CD, that is: AB = 4CD.

* * * * <----AB
*______<----CD

Consider (3): AB is longer than CD. By how much is it longer than CD?

*|* * *| <---- AB
*_______<---- CD
_<----->_
___3CD___

So, AB is 3CD longer than CD. That is, AB is 3 times longer than CD: AB = CD + 3CD = 4CD.

Nice punctuation! You are a very good student. :-D

Yes, the above post is right. Some teachers do say what you mentioned, and they're wrong.
