Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Jack brags too much and it set him back on his heels when the coach told him he wasn’t as good a player as he thought he was.

knock (set) somebody on one’s heels = surprise, shock

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.
