    Smile except or except for

    Hello!
    I am Linh . I am 16 years old . I live in Thanh Hoa . In class , I often do exercises about " except or except for" but I can't distingish between them. Can you help me ?

    If there's another preposition, don't use 'for':
    It rained everywhere except in Scotland.
    Before a verb, don't use 'for':
    He does nothing except complain.
    We generally don't use 'for' before a conjunction:
    It's a nice place except when it snows.
