give the ghost = draw up, stall

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

I had the impression of an old car which would never make the grade up the long slope to Petionville. What would we do if it gave up the ghost at the entrance of the drive?

give the ghost = draw up, stall

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.
