A sentence from an article that ran in the Harvard Law Review:

"Yet, there are a variety of relationships within our legal system that are relevant to statutory and constitutional interpretation."

Why "are" instead of "is"?

I think because "variety of relationships" is Plural.

I think because "variety of relationships" is Plural.

But the plural of "variety" is "varieties." Is "There is a variety of relationships...." wrong?
