It seems that these two forms are correct: research doing or doing research? Am I right? What is the difference?

I'm fond of doing research/ research doing.

I would never say "I'm fond of research doing".

I would say either "I'm fond of doing research" or "I'm fond of researching".

This kind of reversal is possible with some verbs, for instance "making cakes" can become "cake-making".

Many thanks. Could you tell me what verbs are ok for this reversal?
