    Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

    Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

    At once they stood even straighter, and removed their hands, and seemed ready to attend their Sovereign, if need be, to the cannon's mouth, as their ancestors had done before them.
    attend = to remain ready to serve; to apply or direct oneself; to carry out orders , desires
