In the Sea or On the sea or Both

Hi,

Can anyone please confirm which is the correct usage of the preposition In and On where the Sea is concerned as there are conflicting views on their usage? and perhaps provide some explanation on why?

Examples:-

The ship is sailing in the sea or The ship is sailing on the sea?

He is floating on the sea or he is floating in the sea?

The Ship is in the water or on the water?

Float by itself means that something that has not drowned. So it is always "floating on"

You could say:

He is swimming in the sea.
