I heard this term "Jersey girl" on TV show a couple time. Not sure which one. but, besides the girl is from New Jersey, is there any special meaning behind it?
Just wondering. Thanks!

Hello, Philau.

(1) As I type this, no one else has answered, so may I start?

(2) I went on the Internet and found out that Jersey Girl refers

to some girls born and raised in the state of New Jersey. A Jersey Girl

is said to:

love pizza

love beer

have beautiful hair

have a mouth on her. (That is, she is not shy. She tells you what

she thinks.)

(a) In English, we have the word stereotype. That means that we say

people in group X act this way. For example, there is a stereotype that

all the people in group X are good at mathematics. Of course, that is not

true. Some are and some aren't. Well, Jersey Girl is a stereotype. Not

all girls born in New Jersey love beer or have a mouth on them!!!

*****

We also have the term Valley Girl. The stereotype says that she:

lives in California (in the Los Angeles area)

gets anything she wants from her parents

spends a lot of time at the shopping mall

does not get very good marks at school

is always saying words such as:

like

oh my god

whatever

totally

This is, of course, a stereotype. Many girls in California speak

good English and are very intelligent.

*****

In your country, do you also have stereotypes? For example, do you

say that all the people in area X are good or bad or stupid or

smart? That is a stereotype, because -- of course -- NOT all the people

in area X are good or bad or stupid or smart.

*****

Let's hope that a Jersey or Valley Girl answers you.

Thank you

Couldn't agree more! The Parser, as the nickname suggests, knows a lot of English.

He is well-known for his detailed, referenced (almost always) and smart answers and comments.

I gotta love the way that sometimes he starts answering:

If I am correct...

Of course, I may be completely wrong, but this is how I interpret your
sentences.

Apart from the hair, this sounds a bit like an 'Essex girl' :)

PS Hmm, Essex is on the outskirts of London. Go figure... (Well, I shall.)

Thanks, BobK. I heard the term "Essex girl" once and wondered what sort of stereotype it entailed. Now I know!

On the subject of Jersey girls, anyone interested in really understanding what that means should try to watch an episode of the reality TV show "Jersey Shore." It's awful television, more cliched than realistic, but it will help you "get" the stereotype.

Many of the jokes about Essex girls were about sexual promiscuity.

Every once in a while some subset of popular culture will gain fame outside its original regional area. To 90% of the U.S. population the term Jersey Girl would mean nothing more than a girl who lives in New Jersey had there not been a film and TV show or whatever. But sometimes a marketing genius will manage to turn some localised colloquialism into a national phenomenon (like Frank Zappa did with Valley Girl.)
