    giving up on

Please make the following in bold clear for me.

    1. Adult Americans spend billions of dollars and pass tens of billions of hours taking courses in the following.
*Giving up drugs *Giving up on people who take drugs *Drawing with the right hemisphere

    2. By 1884, the asylums of Europe burst with men in the final stages of this disease(general paresis), shrieking obscenities. Controversy swirled over its cause.

Is this saying "the patients were saying obscene words loudly"?

    Thank you.

    *Giving up drugs

*Giving up on people who take drugs - if you "give up on someone", it means you stop supporting or helping them.

*Drawing with the right hemisphere - I have no idea what this means! Perhaps the "right hemisphere" of the brain is (or maybe isn't!) responsible for artistic ability and lots of people take courses in using the right side of their brain to learn to draw.

Yes, but "shrieking" is a bit more than just saying something loudly. It's more like shouting at a very high pitch!

    Thank you.
    See above.
