    Default throw off the scent

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The robbers went different ways hoping to throw the sheriff's men off the scent.

throw off the scent = to mislead; confuse

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V
