    Default go to pieces

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

His nerves has gone to pieces. The sound of the doorbell made his heart palpitate madly.

go to pieces = experience an emotional or mental breakdown

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

Yes, though simply saying "He has gone to pieces" would be more natural and I would prefer it.

There is also a singular/plural problem in the original. It says "His nerves has...". Either use "His nerve has gone" as a standalone phrase, or "His nerves have..."
