    Default as if...

We are conducting this military exercise as if it's a real war.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

I know the best way in this case to write following 'as if' is it were a real war.

However, I was taught by my English teacher that as if it was a real war is acceptable as well. Now my imaginations fly. Since it was can be written as it's, can I write or say like the one at the top colored in blue?

    Thank you.

I have to re-think about it. I just looked it's up in my dictionary and it says it's = it is or it has, not it was.

    Not a teacher.

It should say "if it were" but in speech people often use incorrect grammar.

Especially when a contraction is used.

I would also use "as if it were" but you will hear "as if it was" regularly.

However, as far as your question about the contraction is concerned, and as you found in your grammar book, "it's" is a contraction of "it is" or "it has", but not "it was".
