    Default stucco institution

    The sun was beginning to set when I walked up the front steps of the crazy half-antebellum mansion, half-stucco institution that was Hecate Hall.

    stucco institution ??
    "Stucco" is I kind of rendering, a coating applied to to exterior of houses and other buildings. "Half-stucco means that the building has a coating on part of the wall, usually the top half.

    I don't think 'usually the top half' applies in this case - with an antebellum ground floor and stucco above! But the new[er] wing of the building might well have this rendering only on the upper floors.
