    1- All the essays are good except for Alice's. Why not?

    1&2- Not sure- the general rule is that we can use both after 'all'.
    3&4- The same- we can use both after 'no'
    7&8- Has every in, so OK for me.
    I'd say both are ok in all the above

    5&6- When not qualified by all/every/no, etc, we go for 'except for'

    1- Everyone is tired except Jack.

    The book said we need a "for" in #2, but I can't figure out why.

    Word order- it come before. In other words, 'everyone' has a knock-on effect, but doesn't work backwards. However, I think some would disagree with this.
