    According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE):except / except for = not including the person or thing that you mention. At the beginning of a sentence, always use except for, not just except.

    Additionally,

    If there isn't a subject for 'eat' to agree with in person and number the verb takes its base form. If we add in a subject, we get a conjugated verb,

    My pet snail does nothing, but he eats, so please feed him.
