    Default Past perfect

"I sent a couple of emails to his assistants while I was on vacation, and because they weren't answered I went to talk to one of them yesterday. The assistant said she had forwarded the emails to him and is surprised he hasn't replied yet."

Is the past perfect necessary in the above construction?

    Thanks.

Is the past perfect necessary in the above construction? I think No, but I hope one of our great teachers to answer about this.

    Thanks.

But why isn't the sentence like this:
The assistant said she had forwarded the emails to him and was surprised he hadn't replied yet.

    Cheers!
