    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

A study commissioned by the German government has recommended an extension of up to 20 years to the life nuclear power plants, according to reports. The government faces resistanceif it presses ahead. (Energy | 28.08.2010)

face resistance = confront with resistance

press = exert pressure or force to or upon

ahead = at a later time

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

Westerwelle warned against such a move, saying that the Balkan country should press ahead with political and economic reforms after elections on October 3.

press ahead = continue (with a course of action)

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

You are not quite correct, althought it was a good attempt

face resistance = be confronted with resistance, not confront with

to press ahead = to continue (with a course of action)

To be "pressing ahead" often implies that you are continuing in the face of opposition or hardship or some kind of resistance, as opposed to just "continuing" which is more neutral in meaning.

Tullia has already answered this. I'm not sure why you started a new thread to check your understanding, (and she is not happy that you did in such a way - it gives the impression that you doubt her word).

I have merged the two threads.
