give somebody a good dressing down

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

He was very rude and so I gave him a good dressing down.

give somebody dressing down = tell off, rate, thrash, give someone a good beating, clobber, paddle(??)

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

Re: give somebody a good dressing down

Give somebody a dressing down means '...tell off, berate, reprimand...'

Definitely not 'thrash, give someone a good beating, clobber, paddle'.
