how to display that one has a PhD

When one has recently earned a degree, such as a PhD, how does one show this on a business card? Is the display different for addressing someone in a business letter?

For example, would a business card show:
    Dr. Melody Smith, PhD or

    Melody Smith, PhD ?

    Thank you,
    Rita
