    Host

There is/are a host of reasons.

Which is correct: "is" or "are"?

    Thanks!

Is "a host" singular or plural? See if that helps.

"Host" is singular -- that much I know -- but I read the sentence "There are a host of reasons." in an online newspaper article, which prompted me to start this thread.

Strictly speaking I suppose it should be "is" singular, but "are" doesn't look or sound wrong.
