    I can cite no authoritative reference for this whatsoever, but my earliest cognizance of the word was in the late 1950s - early 60s, as a (pseudo-Italian?) term of endearment used by a TV/film personality whose identity slips my mind-- one of the Ratpack, perhaps?

    Now, of course, it is a Nintendo character.
