    Hi there, and welcome!

Simply go to our glossary page here: http://www.usingenglish.com/glossary...e-grammar.html

I'm not a teacher, so please consider any advice I give in that context.

Descriptive grammar describes the language that people actually use, while prescriptive grammar tells people what they should say.

Descriptive grammar involves cataloguing what people say and how they use words. It imposes no rules or standards and does not comment on correctness.

Prescriptive grammar sets a set of standard rules for words and usage. Therefore, there are incorrect uses in prescriptive grammar.

Descriptivist: People say "Me and Jimmy are going to the park".
Prescriptivist: People should say "Johnny and I are going to the park."
