    Howard or Edwards

Howard Jones had a hard time keeping a straight face when he met Edwards; cursed with a sense of humor that got him into trouble whenever a private joke sent him into giggling fits, Jones Kept remembering that when McKusick had first phoned to see if he would meet a "mouse geneticist" from England...

Does "cursed with a sense of humor that got him into trouble whenever a private joke sent him into giggling fits" refer to Howard or Edwards?

Is it saying that whenever Edwards laughs, Jones remembers the first time McKucick phoned Jones?

What kind of joke is a "private" joke?

Howard Jones is "cursed with a sense of humor that got him into trouble whenever a private joke sent him into giggling fits."

Edwards (which by the way is a last name) is only mentioned once: when Jones met Edwards. Nothing is mentioned about Edwards laughing.

What kind of joke is a "private" joke?
"private" as in not public knowledge, among a few select people.

I don't understand the whole sentence then...
What does it mean by ""cursed with a sense of humor that got him into trouble whenever a private joke sent him into giggling fits"?

    Re: Howard or Edwards

    .
A private joke is also often one that outsiders would not understand.

Jones had a difficult time avoiding laughter when he met Edwards, because he (Jones) remembered a private joke (to Jones) somehow involving Edwards, McKusick, the geneticist and the phone call.

You'll have to tell us what that joke is-- I presume it is clarified in the passage?

PS: Your second post slipped in there! 'Cursed with' means that he has the bad habit of (laughing in front of people who don't understand why he is doing so-- because it is a joke that only Jones is remembering).

    Does that help?

    Re: Howard or Edwards

Yes, I understand it now. The private joke is when Mckusick had first phoned to see if Jones would meet a "mouse geneticist"(Edwards), Jones had conjured up "an image of a mouse who knew a lot about genetics."
