Default in the army vs in the military

    "He's in the army."

    OR

    "He's in the military."

    Interchangeable?

The military, at least in the US, consists of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

So everyone in the army is in the military, but not everyone in the military is in the army.

So it's more general? "What does he he do for a living? He's in the military."
