Dear teachers,
Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?
Yet a man it was, I could no longer be in doubt about that. I began to recall that I had heard of cannibals. I was within an ace of calling for help. (R. I. Stevenson, “The Treasure Island”)
within an ace = almost, close to, by a hair’s breadth; on the verge , on the brink
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V
