    Question Compared with?

I need some help with the following sentence:

"European beech seems to be a species with much higher competitive ability, compared with other tree species."

It seems to me that it is not correct and that the comparative "much higher competitive ability" should be followed by "than". Am I right? How would you re-write the sentence?

    Thanks a lot!

    2. Compared with other tree species, European beech seems to be a species with [a] much higher competitive ability.
    3. European beech seems to be a species with much higher competitive ability than other tree species.
