    it will not wash

    Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

You asked me to divorce you, didn’t you?
    Certainly not.
Are you trying to make me believe that that was part of the dream?
    I don’t know what you’re talking about.
It’s sweet of you to lie – but it won’t wash. (N. Coward, “Shadow Play”)

But anyway, that explanation won’t wash. (A. Christie, “Selected Stories”)

it will not wash = that serve no purpose; this is beneath criticism, it don’t do/pass

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V
