I wonder if someone could remind me of the rules for using "start" as opposed to "begin".
For example we start the car, we don't begin it.
We start at the beginning but we don't don't begin at the start.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
