    But I was asking about something else. Should I use "the" before "diphthong" there? I never know what to do in such situations. Is it "the letter s" or "letter s"?     Perhaps you should - we might be surprised by what people say.

    In the meantime, I'll give you my personal answer. I would use the before diphthong and letter s.

    A (possibly flawed) analogy might be:


    Figure 8 is elegant. = the information, tables, etc to be found in the eighth figure/table/chart.
    The figure 8 is elegant. = 8

    I must also correct myself. I said that "far" has /a/ in it. Something went wrong in my mind. It doesn't. I'll edit the post, I'm very sorry about the confusion.
