    Comma

"It was about 16 years ago in Saint Joseph's gym in Philadelphia, where a talented high school player first met an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers." (Source: Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau recalls first meeting Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant - ESPN Chicago)

Why is there a comma after "where"? What follows "Philadelphia" seems to be a restrictive clause. Also, the sentence would sound better to me if "where" were replaced with "that."

    What do you think?

    Thanks!

I agree, it would be better with "that" and without a comma.

I agree that would be the most neutral phrasing, but I think the original works as a “scene setting” sentence. In my opinion, “where” has a little more flavour than “that”.
