    Dear teachers,

    Would you tell me whether there is proper usage of the different collocations of “dub” in the following sentences?

    He has dubbed his website "the people's intelligence agency" and is a thorn in the side of most national governments.

    A man of wealth is dubbed a man of worth.

    dub = call; entitle; give a nickname to

    The film, originally shot in Italian, was dubbed into English for its American release.

    dub = double

    His diadem was dropped down dubbed with stones.

    dub = adorn

    The king dubbed his son Henry a knight.

    dub = raise (someone) to knighthood

    Dub music from CD to tape

    dub = make a copy of a recording

    a thorn in somebody’s side = someone or something that continually causes problems

    a thorn in the flesh of someone

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    dub = double

    This is when the original voices are recorded over rather than using written subtitles.

    Hi Tdol,

    Thank you for your considerate suggestion.

    Take it easy! I keep two things apart: double = "stand it for| or "double a part" and double = dub (lake the sound track for a film in another (native) language = synchronize) as in "The film was dubbed in Bulgarian."
