Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The head of the German police force, Matthias Seeger, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper that there have been a number of tip-offs from different sources.

tip-off = hint, secret information

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

Yes, that's correct. It can also be a verb:

They tipped off the German police.

It can also mean the beginning of a basketball game!
