    Default Would

    Hi,

could you please tell me why the word "would" is used in the following sentence:

I am glad that the new Pope too would win our hearts.

Does it mean that he has already won their hearts?

    Thank you very much

    Hanka

    Default Re: Would

In this case, would denotes intention or willingness.

    Look at these examples:

    I would date Sarah.

    Sarah too would date me.

"I would have a word with you." "I would like another piece of pie." "That is a school I would attend."

Your sentence tells me that the new Pope, like the previous one, is willing to win our hearts.
