    Unhappy metonymy?

    Hello Teachers

The word metonymy is very confusing, is it similar to an analogy?

    No.

You use a metonymy by saying one thing, one item, one place, to REPRESENT something else.

The White House said that the war in Iraq is good.

Really, "The White House" is a building, and a building cannot talk! But this metonymy uses "The White House" to REPRESENT/SUBSTITUTE/WORK IN PLACE OF the President, or the people who work in the White House.

PEKING announced today that China will turn blue. LONDON replied that England would turn green. THE GOVERNMENT BANK said they were taking all the money. But THE PEACE MOVEMENT will have a parade tomorrow.
