Question about " Get cute with"

What does " Get cute with" mean in this context? Thanks!

    TOBY
[shutting the door] What did I tell you before you went on the air yesterday?

    JOSH
You said, ‘don’t get cute with Mary Marsh.’

I said, ‘don’t get cute with Mary Marsh.’ I said Al Caldwell is not to be treated
    like some revival tent clown.

Default Re: about " Get cute with"

    "Don't get cute with"...

    Means:

Do not mock, do not make fun of... do not make fun or tease her when you are talking to her...

    Example:

    Me: I like apples.
You: Oh, you like apples? You love apples? Are you going to marry an apple? Can I call you Mr. Apple?
Me: Are you getting cute with me? Stop it. Be serious.
