    Default Article-possessive combination; is it correct?

    Here's one sentence from one of today's VOA reports

    Consequently, Nicholas Lardy of the Washington-based Institute for International Economics sees the Unocal deal as a mere drop in the China's oil bucket.

    It sounded right with me when I first heard it. But later when I looked at the transcript I couldn't find a explanation for it: how can a definite article be combined with a possessive? Aren't possessives per se carrying a sense of definiteness?
