I cannot understand the bold letters.
I am sure that all of you know where we get apples. They come from apple trees. Well, what would you do if you planted an apple tree in your garden, watered it, and took care of it and it never produced any apples? It wouldn't be much good as an apple tree, would it?
What does it means?
An apple-tree's 'job' is to provide fruit (although from the tree's point of view its job is to produce viable seeds surrounded by food either for the young tree or for the animal that disperses the seed). A tree that produces a lot of fruit is doing its job 'as an apple tree'. A tree that doesn't isn't much good.
