Presentations of locations or situations are confusing me.
My question is about where a place is in relation to other place.

Suppose that here's a map containing 9 locations as below,

123
456
789

The four main compass directions are indicated below,
N
W + E
S

Is each of the following sentences true or false? My answer, probably wrong, is in the brackets.
Thank you.

4 is south of 1. (T) Yes
4 is onthe south of 1. (T) I don't think this one is right. The nearest you might get to using 'on' in this sort of context is 'Argentina is on the southern tip of South America', but you can't really say 'on the south' of something.
4 is tothe south of 1. (T) Yes
4 is onthe south side of 1.(T) Not really. You can have something on the south(ern) side of an object (mountain or stadium for example), but not meaning 'south and adjacent to...' which is what I think you are trying to say here.
4 is tothe south side of 1.(F) I agree - I don't think this is valid either. I would not use this expression.

7 is south of 1. (T) Yes
7 is onthe south of 1. (F) See comments above for 4 and 1
7 is tothe south of 1. (T) I would only use 'to the south' when one location was directly south of another, without anything significant in between. So I would not say 'Canada is to the north of Argentina, but I would say 'Canada is to the north of the US'. So in the map, if 4 was a 'significant' location, I would probably not use this one.
7 is onthe south side of 1.(F) See comments above for 4 and 1
7 is tothe south side of 1.(T) See comments above for 4 and 1

5 is south of 1. (T) Yes
5 is onthe south of 1.(T) No - see comments above for 4 and 1
5 is tothe south of 1.(T) I don't think so. See comments for 7 and 1. 'To the south of' in my opinion, means 'directly to the south of' and as 5 is south-east of 1, it is not directly south.

④
5 is southeast of 1.(T) Yes
5 is onthe southeast of 1. (T) No - see comments for 4 and 1
5 is tothe southeast of 1. (T) Yes

-------------------------------------------
⑤
5 is tothe corner of 1.(T) No - 'to the corner of' isn't used in identifying locations on a map.

--------------------------------------------
⑥
9 is southeast of 1.(T) Yes
9 is onthe southeast of 1.(F) See comments on 4 and 1
9 is tothe southeast of 1. (T) See comments for 7 and 1 and 5 and 1.

--------------------------------------
⑦
9 is tothe corner of 1.(T) No - 'to the corner of' isn't used in identifying locations on a map

⑧
1 is in the northwest of the MAP. (T) Yes - or in the north-west corner of the map

Two words were placed together in my first post. There were some sentences without a blank between two words.
Sorry for my carelessness.
