    final cleanup

Would you please explain the following in bold more easily?

As the Mac team worked feverishly on final cleanup of last-minute items for the much-delayed launch, Steve took a demo model on the road for a pre-launch press tour visiting eight or so cities across the U.S. to give media people a sneak preview of the computer.

    Thank you.

    Re: final cleanup

They were working to fix the little errors that kept the product from being perfect, and were working quickly because the product was already behind the schedule that they had set for its release into the market.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
