    Default Present Simple vs Perfect

    Hello!

In one of the threads there is a sentence

My friend is in Japan for 6 months.

I'm quite surprised as I've never heard we can use Present Simple in this way. If I understand the meaning rightly, my friend went to Japan 6 months ago, and she is still there. So there's been 6 months since she went to Japan. So why do we use Simple instead of the Present Perfect? Is there any point here that I seem to miss?

    Thank you in advance.

My friend is in Japan for 6 months. This means that your friend is in Japan, she may have just arrived there or she may have been there a while, but she is planning to stay there for a total of six months.

so '6 months' has a future meaning... Thank you! It's crystal clear now.

    It's not future as such.

If she is in the middle of the stay when we say "she is there for six months", then only three months remains in the future.

As bhaisa said, it is the total planned time of the stay.
