increase students' willingness

i'm from indonesia
i've just graduated from my study, and now i'm teaching in an english course,,
i have a problem in teaching my junior high students, they have a very little willingness in learning english, they do not want to try to speak english in my class though i've tried hard for it.
their main reason is that because they do not understand english,,
can you help me to make them want to learn and speak english..
one more additional information about these students is that they've already had so many courses before coming to my class that make them tired to learn more,

(1) Congratulations on your graduation and your new position as a teacher

of English. I am sure that you will be very successful.

(2) Here are a few ideas that might help you (of course, junior high

students are very difficult to teach and control because of their

age):

(a) If they see that you are really enthusiastic about English,

some of that enthusiasm may motivate them.

(b) Try to really understand English grammar yourself. If the students

suspect that your understanding of grammar is weak, they will lose

respect for you and lose interest in the class.

(c) Think of interesting activities and lessons. There are many

websites that suggest ways how to teach English in a non-boring

way. Needless to say, you need to use lots of visual aids. Start

collecting photographs from magazines. Also use what is called

realia. That is, real things. Don't just say "orange." Pass a real

orange around for them to feel.



(d) If you can show your students how English can help them

personally, then they will begin to take an interest.

(e) Of course, they need to feel that you really respect them.

Don't ever embarrass them. Never criticize them in front of the class.

If you make a mistake in grammar, admit it.

(f) Have some kind of reward system. Maybe a student gets a star

on the chart each time she answers correctly. Occasionally give

a treat (some kind of pastry) to the whole class when they have

done especially well.

(g) Remember: the beginning of the class period is vital. When they

walk in, have something for them to copy (maybe a quotation or a

three short questions to answer). This will quiet them down.

Hi, congratulations for achieving your Teaching Certificate! I think that I can understand your problem as I faced some similar difficulties last year when teaching English to teenagers and finally suceeded.
Maybe you can adapt the program to something that really captures students' interests according to their age. I would try surprising them by downloading some songs and music they like and make them listen to them and get the vocabulary and grammar from there. I hope this gives you good results and you can start making the difference with the courses they've studied in the past.
