    2. There are derogatory informal words like poofter and queer.
    Never use these words, they are completely unacceptable and likely to get you into trouble!
    You can add "fag" and "homo" to that list.
    However, within the gay community, people have "taken back" these words, and often use them to refer to themselves and each other without intending it as an insult (the same way that African-Americans have reclaimed "the n-word").
