    Hi Teacher:

Could you help me with the following sentences? I am not quite sure what they mean.

    1. You canít sell but half the people these days.

    2. I cannot get a word in edgeways. We have been over all this before.

    3. Youíre trying to stuff the hog by way of his ass.

    4. Less than a hundred corporations have swallowed all but a few leavings.
These industries have already sucked the blood and softened the bones of
    the people.

    Thanks a bunch.

    1. You canít sell but half the people these days.

If you want people to buy something from you, only 1/2 of the people are interested. Even if you have a very good product to sell, 1/2 of the people do not care, will not buy it.

    2. I cannot get a word in edgeways.
You are talking sooooooo much, I can not even speak one word... you are talking, you are not listening to me.. I can't get a word in edgewise... please stop talking and listen to me... let me say one word!

We have been over all this before.
We have discussed this situation before... 'been all over this' before... talked about it.

"Mother, can I go to a movie?"
"No! You asked me yesterday, you asked me this morning, you are asking me now... I say no, no, no. We have been over all this before. The answer is no."

    3. Youíre trying to stuff the hog by way of his ass.
This is an awful, rude sentence. It means, 'You are doing something the hard way, there are easier ways to do what you are trying to do."

Me: "I am going to go from France to China. I think I will walk to China."
You: "Wow, you are trying to stuff a hog by way of his ass... it is much easier to fly in an airplane to China."

    4. Less than a hundred corporations have swallowed all but a few leavings.
Another awful, rude sentence. Less than 100 businesses have all the customers. There are no more customers left.. no customers for any other businesses.

These industries have already sucked the blood and softened the bones of the people.
These 100 businesses have taken all the customers' money, the customers now have no more money to buy our products.

Where do you get these awful sentences?
