Help! Can anyone tell me if the following sentences sound all right to a native speaker of English?

My parents loved sports, my mom went in for gymnastics and my dad went in for canoeing. As for me ... etc

I was told that to ask someone about his sporting activity one can say like this:"Do you do any sport?" And what about the sentences above? Would it be better to say "My parents loved to do sports, my mom did gymnastics and my dad did canoeing. As for me ... etc ??????????:?:

Can "go in for" be used with some sporting activity at all? If yes, when?

Yes, it's possible (and quite natural) to say "I don't usually go in for sport".

Since it's a thread about sport, I hope noone minds me asking a question here.

Can we also say 'Do you do any sports?"

Sorry for being a nerd, but would that mean "I don't do any sports"? or would it sound more like "I don't like to do sports"? In what situation could one say "I don't go in for sport"?
Will the following conversation sound natural:
- Do you go in for sport?
- Yes, I do.
_ What sport do you go in for?
- Basketball.

Can I ask someone "Do you go in for sport" to find out what sport they do regulary? (Mind: I am interested in what sport they do, not in what sport they like!) Thank you in advance. I bet this question of mine is crucial to thousands of Russian teachers, because many of them can't comprehense this collocation "go in for sport", but almost all Russian children are taught it at school as a way to say "I do (not like to do!) a sport activity(ies) regulary".
